Investing in a Quality Yoga Mat, is it worth it?

Updated: Feb 28

When I started Yoganomalous, I started with the belief that yoga is more than movement, it’s alignment. Alignment between breath and body. Between intention and action. Between how we live and what we support… So the question becomes:

If yoga teaches mindfulness, why practice on a disposable plastic mat that has the potential to harm your body and the planet?

Let’s talk about why investing in a high-quality, eco-friendly yoga mat isn’t just an upgrade, it’s a reflection of your values and an enhancement to your practice. Let's start with…

The problem with cheap plastic yoga mats...

Most low-cost yoga mats are made from PVC, a petroleum-based plastic. These mats are inexpensive to produce, but they come with hidden costs, such as phthalates, plasticizer and chemical odors. Cheap, plastic yoga mats also tend to wear out quickly, and once you dispose of them, they sit in landfills for hundreds of years, shedding microplastics. And it’s not just PVC, TPE and PU are two other very common types of plastics used in yoga mat production.

These plastic materials are designed to be replaced, not maintained and respected. Yoga isn’t just a physical practice, it’s a lifestyle rooted in awareness, presence, and respect for the world around us. So why settle for a yoga mat that contradicts those values?

When choosing a yoga mat, the materials we unroll under our hands and feet matter. The difference between a high-quality, eco-friendly, yoga mat and a cheap plastic one is far more than price, it’s a decision that affects your body, your practice, and the planet.

This is why Yoganomalous does things differently.

I use natural materials that are supportive to create my mats. Yoganomalous mats are crafted from natural cork and sustainably sourced tree rubber, renewable materials designed to support both your practice and the planet. Cork contains suberin, a waxy substance in its cellular structure (that I absolutely GUSH over in a previous blog post) that makes it:

✔ Water-resistant & grippy.

✔ Antimicrobial & odor-resistant.

✔ Non-toxic & free of harsh chemicals.

✔ Naturally durable & long lasting WHILE being 100% biodegradable.

On the contrary, a plastic mat is problematic.

It might feel more affordable to grab a cheap yoga mat for $20–$40. But these mats wear out quickly, lack or lose grip over time, tear easily, and are a breeding ground for micro-organisms such as mold and fungi, they also start to smell quickly as they absorb sweat into the material below the surface. This all means they need frequent replacing.

To put this into perspective…

Buying 3 cheap $30 plastic yoga mats will last you anywhere from 1-3 years. They will lack support for your practice, they will cause more pollution from disposing of them when they're no longer functional, it could leach chemicals and toxins, and can become an environment that harbors bacteria after just a few practices.

On the other end of the spectrum, investing in a $100 Yoganomalous cork yoga mat will last just as long as 3 cheap plastic yoga mats, if not longer. After your Yoganomalous Cork yoga mats is retired, you can guilt free dispose of it as it is biodegradable and made from plants. Yoganomalous Cork yoga mats are chemical and toxin free, and because cork is antimicrobial, your Yoganomalous mat is resistant to mold and fungus, and odor resistant too.

Quality = Long-Term Value.

But beyond money, there’s energetic value. A mat that peels, flakes, loses grip and smells is an energetic drain. Investing in a high quality Yoganomalous mat creates a different experience. It becomes part of your ritual. At Yoganomalous, this isn’t fast yoga gear, it's intentional design!

Your practice is sacred, your mat should be too!

Every morning flow, every grounding breath, every breakdown and breakthrough...

Your mat witnesses it all. By choosing a biodegradable, eco-friendly Yoganomalous Cork Yoga mat, you say to yourself:

✨ I care about what touches my body.

✨ I care about what impacts the earth.

✨ I choose longevity over disposability.

✨ I align my purchases with my practice.

That’s what Yoganomalous stands for. Because when you choose a Yoganomalous cork yoga mat, you’re not just buying equipment. You’re supporting sustainable materials, thoughtful production, and practice focused designs with planet focused values. Yoga is about unity. Your mat should reflect that.

When you invest in the planet, you invest in your practice. ♡ㅤ
